Retain Wellbeing CIC, on behalf of GIFT Café Puddington has been awarded funding by Cheshire police and crime commissioner
Retain Wellbeing CIC and the Café have been successful in our application to police and crime commissioner David Keane’s Community Police Fund to deliver a project to make Puddington more inclusive and safer.
Retain has been awarded a grant to purchase a marquee style, outdoor area with flooring to bring people together to enjoy activities outdoors which are all dementia inclusive. The structure will be in the grounds of the GIFT Café and will build upon the work we started before lockdown last year. As soon as everyone is allowed to meet up outside of family groups they intend to use the space for sessions and activities organised by Retain and others to socialise, have fun and be creative.
They worked with our local policing team to develop the bid to ensure it addressed local community safety issues including COVID19 and specifically, inclusion for all.
The Community Police Fund links directly to the recently launched initiative to increase police visibility in every community in Cheshire by providing a dedicated Police Constable (PC) and Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) for all 122 policing communities.
The fund has been developed using money seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act (PoCA) 2002 to send a clear message to criminals that crime doesn’t pay.
PCC David Keane said: “By taking out the profits that fund crime and reinvesting them into community, we can help prevent further offences and increase community safety.
“This fund is empowering our local communities to work directly with our 122 community PCs and PCSOs on tailored projects which make a real difference to your local area.
“I look forward to seeing the difference this project will make in preventing crime and anti-social behaviour.”
Service Development Manager Caroline Hutton said “We can’t wait to get going! First thing’s first-we will be shopping for an appropriate structure and flooring to ensure our recent weather we have witnessed does not prohibit its use. Add some tables and chairs (socially distanced!) and activities from physical activity, bird watching, singing and anything else you can think of and we will be able to do our part in re-building people’s confidence and outlook, whether they are affected by dementia or not. We look forward to welcoming you all when the time is right!”

A bit more about us
We are Cheshire’s seven day a week dedicated Dementia-Friendly café and we recently celebrated our first birthday.
GIFT Café, set in the picturesque village of Puddington, is the brainchild of friends Cathrina Moore and Caroline Hutton.
Cathrina and her family are the owners of our neighbouring two care homes – Plessington Court and the Chapel House Care Home.
The pair set up the popular café in the Lodge on the site to provide a warm and friendly environment for visiting families to take their loved ones to share homemade food, seven days a week.
The Chapel House Lane café has also quickly become a popular destination for cyclists, walkers, dog owners and residents from the local area who come for its famous home-made soups, fresh sandwiches and cakes.
What is a dementia friendly café?
All of the staff in GIFT Café are ‘Dementia Friends’, it is a not for profit organisation and all profits are donated to projects tackling social isolation in the community.
We wanted to set up GIFT Café in Puddington to help people who live with dementia and their carers to live as well as possible, for longer.
People with dementia are often isolated and so are their carers. We have regular customers who see our café as one of the few places they can come where they are not judged. They love the idea of coming to a place in the community that welcomes them.
All our staff are Dementia Friendly – our youngest is sixteen – which means they know exactly how to make a person with dementia feel comfortable.
This can mean making sure the right music is played at the right volume, as many people with dementia don’t like loud noises, or being on hand to give reassurance when it’s needed.
Visitors to GIFT Café all know Paula.
Famous for her home-made soups and cakes, she is responsible for creating all our menus.
She says: “GIFT Café is a really special place that is doing good in the community. I love seeing customers regularly coming in with their families, enjoying some quality time together over a cup of tea and tasty home-made food.’’
“We often have three generations of a family coming for afternoon tea, as well as groups of cyclists from all over the North West popping in for barista-style coffees and full English breakfasts.”
GIFT Café runs a series of events for the public including music evenings, Brums & Buns, a collection of vintage cars, sing-alongs and craft days as well as biscuit decoration days for young children.
Keep an eye out on our social media for all the latest events.
Gift Cafe Puddington is wheelchair accessible with a drop off point directly next to the wheelchair access. We have plenty of car park space for customer vehicles to the rear of the cafe.
